In the same week of August three Nordic companies reported figures that at first sight have little to do with each other. A Finnish asset manager buys a Swedish rival. A Finnish insurer grows in corporate business. And a Swedish miner raises billions for a copper mine with no revenue.

The short version

  • Mandatum is buying 78.4 percent of Stockholm based Cliens Holding for 705 million Swedish kronor, around 64 million euros.
  • Sampo lifted its first half 2026 insurance result by five percent in constant currency to 418 million euros.
  • Viscaria raised around 1.7 billion kronor in fresh capital for a copper mine near Kiruna that starts producing at the end of 2027 at the earliest.

The purchase in Stockholm

On 13 August 2026 the Finnish financial group Mandatum announced it would take 78.4 percent of Cliens Holding AB, the parent of the Stockholm asset manager Cliens Kapitalförvaltning.

The price is 705 million Swedish kronor, around 64 million euros, payable in cash from existing funds. Completion is expected in the fourth quarter of 2026 subject to regulatory approval.

Cliens is a partner led firm with 26 full time staff and nine actively managed funds, mostly equity, plus bond strategies and segregated mandates. At 30 June 2026 it managed around 36 billion Swedish kronor, down from 37 billion at the end of 2025. It serves about 100 institutional clients and around 30 distribution partners. The existing management keeps 21.6 percent and the firm continues under its own brand.

Mandatum is pursuing a shift towards capital light business. A firm that gives guarantees, as in classic life insurance, has to hold regulatory capital against them. A firm that manages other people's money for a fee does not carry the investment risk and needs far less capital.

In the second quarter of 2026 pre tax profit from the capital light business rose 32 percent to 27.1 million euros. Client assets under management hit a high of 16.7 billion euros, up 16 percent. Fee results grew 21 percent to 22.4 million euros at a stable fee margin of 1.12 percent. Group pre tax profit doubled to 79.1 million euros and organic capital generation reached 90 million euros.

The number that was misread

Several sources reported a jump of 64.87 percent in the Mandatum share. That figure comes from pre market trading of a secondary listing in the United States, which moved from 3.90 to 6.43 dollars. Such lines trade in small volume, so a single order can move the quoted price sharply.

On the home exchange in Helsinki the gain was around ten percent. Anyone judging a price move should always look at the primary listing.

The insurer in the background

Mandatum was spun off from Finland's Sampo in 2023. Sampo itself reported a first half 2026 insurance result up five percent in constant currency to 418 million euros. The group cites premium growth and a strong combined ratio as the drivers, with particular momentum in the British retail business and in Nordic corporate business.

The combined ratio sets claims paid plus administrative costs against premiums earned. Below 100 percent an insurer makes money on underwriting itself. Nordic property and casualty insurers have long counted as unusually profitable because their markets are concentrated, digitalisation is advanced and competition runs less through price.

The copper mine with no revenue

The Swedish miner Viscaria published its quarterly report on 13 August 2026. There is no revenue and production is scheduled to start at the end of 2027.

The company is preparing to reopen a closed copper mine near Kiruna. The known mineral resource is 108 million tonnes of ore at a copper grade of 0.90 percent, equal to around 967,000 tonnes of copper. A feasibility study shows a net present value of 4.4 billion kronor and an internal rate of return of 17.3 percent at full production of 26,000 tonnes of copper a year. Initial mine life is put at 17 years.

In June 2026 a heavily oversubscribed share issue brought in around 1.7 billion kronor of new capital. Together with the simultaneous conversion of shareholder loans of around 680 million kronor, the total comes to about 2.4 billion kronor. A European infrastructure investor put in up to 600 million kronor and existing large shareholders around 333 million.

Total project funding need is put at around ten billion kronor, of which about 3.7 billion was secured. Project finance of up to around 4.8 billion kronor is under negotiation with two international banks.

Frequently asked questions

What is Mandatum buying in Sweden

Mandatum is acquiring 78.4 percent of Cliens Holding AB, the parent of the Stockholm asset manager Cliens Kapitalförvaltning. The price is 705 million Swedish kronor, around 64 million euros, paid from existing funds. Completion is expected in the fourth quarter of 2026.

Did the Mandatum share really rise 64.87 percent

No. That figure comes from pre market trading of a thinly traded secondary listing in the United States, which moved from 3.90 to 6.43 dollars. On the primary listing in Helsinki the gain was around ten percent.

What does capital light business mean in finance

Capital light means a firm manages other people's money for a fee and does not carry the investment risk itself. It therefore has to hold much less regulatory capital than a provider that gives guarantees. Results swing less and are easier to grow.

When will the Viscaria copper mine produce

Production is scheduled to start at the end of 2027. Until then there is no revenue. Total funding need is around ten billion kronor, of which about 3.7 billion is secured, while project finance of up to 4.8 billion kronor is still being negotiated.
